|
|
Problem: I'm experiencing problems with Spb Backup 1.5.1 (and earlier versions) on my iPaq 1940: Scheduled backup doesn't start. The cube icon appears in the taskbar, but nothing happens, even if I press the "Backup" button. If I reset the device, backup commences.
Background: At 3:33 in the morning the built-in iPAQ Backup application (version 1.1.0.6 from Sprite Software) runs automatically [backing up the entire contents of the PDA to storage card]. This takes only a few minutes. At 5:00 in the morning Spb Backup launches automatically, except that it doesn't do its thing [making a 7-day rolling PIM-only backup to built-in iPaq storage], as described above.
Analysis: If I do not perform iPAQ Backup backup, scheduled Spb Backup backup works flawlessly. I therefore think it's safe to assume that the former interferes with the latter somehow. (The iPAQ Backup application is instructed to shut down all other process before it does its thing. But isn't Spb Backup activated through a timer hook? Alarms work fine, even after Spb Backup has run.) But here's the really weird thing: If I run the device on external power (i.e. leave it in the cradle), everything works flawlessly, too! (Yes, I've cleared the "Backup only on AC power" check box in Spb Backup.) If memory serves me right, I did not have this problem with earlier version of Spb Backup (around 1.0 or 1.1 or so), but this could be related to me making other changes in my setup since then, of course. Is this a known problem?
Conclusion: I'm baffled! |

| The application is installed in main memory in the standard location (\Program Files\Spb Backup\). |

Jacob, could you please try this latest beta version and let us know if it solves the problem?

I dug up version 1.0 and installed it on my device. Same same. I'll leave it up to reader to guess whether I have changed my setup somehow or gone senile.
At least, we now know that my problems aren't related to a newer version of Spb Backup. I'll go ahead and try the latest beta now. Stay tuned... |

Went ahead and tried the latest beta (1.5.3 build 2497). Same result.
I think we can safely conclude that the problem has nothing to do with the version of Spb Backup. |

Jacob,
our QA team confirmed that such issue could happen on some devices.
Could you please select Tools->Advanced Options->Do not stop processes to see if it helps? _________________ Alexander Shalin

Hi Alexander,
I reported this problem a while ago to the tech support but was unable at the time to go through the various troubleshooting processes (sorry). I did try the above suggestion, and it did not work this morning. _________________ --

I have tried to uncheck "Stop processes before backup" in Spb Diary under "Tools > Advanced Options > General". I have also tried to uncheck "Stop Processes Before Backup" in iPaq Backup under "Options". Neither helps.
I have also tried backing up to external storage (Storage Card) instead of internal storage (iPaq File Store). Still not working.
Some I'm left where I began: To get any version of Spb Backup from 1.0 through to the latest beta to run without rebooting, I either have to (a) not run iPaq Backup first, or (b) keep the device running on external power. Solution (b) is what really puzzles me...
I have run out of ideas and will revert to version 1.5.1, backing up every morning after a soft reset.
Let me know if there is anything else you would like me to test. |

I'm experiencing something similar. I have a Dell Axim X51v and have recently purchased and installed Spb Backup 1.5.1. I set the scheduled backup to run at 4:30AM everyday and to backup to a CF card.
The first two days everything worked fine and then the backup stopped running at 4:30AM. Instead the device just sat in the cradle until I removed it and turned it on, usually about 6:30AM. At that point the backup would start and complete normally. I do not have to reset the device for the backup to begin but I would like to have the backup complete when I start to use the PDA in the morning.
As things are now, after I turn on the PDA in the morning, I have to wait 20 minutes for the backup to complete before I can use it.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Bob |

The past two nights, I've left the device on and charging when I went to bed (instead of off and charging like usual), and it has backed up. Could it be the program is trying to access a card or do something before the device fully wakes up? I know (for whatever reason) that this device takes a bit longer to become responsive after power on than previous device (non-WM5) I've had. Just thinking out loud. _________________ --

Man, I am glad to hear that. Thought I was going crazy.

Your guess is as good as mine. Or better, actually, since I couldn't come up with a theory in the first place.
I can reproduce this 100% of the time. Sounds like you are getting similar results. With a bit of luck, the developers at Spb can reproduce this consistently, too. Maybe there's light at the end of the tunnel after all. |

| I also have a x51v and find I have to do a soft reset in the morning for the 03:00 AM scheduled SPB Backup (1.5.1) to run properly. I've tried leaving the x51v turned on at night. I've tried closing all running programs before turning it off at night. And I've tried closing all running programs and leaving it on at night. I got the x51v about 10 days ago and the scheduled backup has never run properly. The only other "backup software" I have installed is SKTools and that is not scheduled to ever run, nor have I ever used it to perform a backup. I migrated from a x50v and scheduled SPB Backups worked flawlessly on it. |

I also have SKTools installed on my X51v but have never used the backup features. Its possible the couple of times Spb Backup worked correctly for me was before I installed SKTools but I don't recall exactly. |
